USA EAGLE: Phillip Thiel

USA RUGBY HOOKER  – Philip Thiel

Phil Thiel…AKA Papa Bear, Big Dave USA, Kaveman has returned home from an unforgettable experience at the 2011 RWC! He is what all our youth ruggers should want to be….the goal of becoming a NATIONAL rugby player.
Thiel started his rugby career at 17 in high school with the Alliance Youth program in Traverse City, He went to SVSU to play football and realized he loved rugby and came back to TC to play for the Blues for 2 years. Phil won an MVP award and with the help of club members, overseas and home Phil was on his way to England to play for Cinderford RFC.
Phil came back a little disgruntled but enjoyed the experience and set his goals high make the USA Eagles and Play in the World cup in 2011. Scott Lawrence (former Life University coach) called shortly after Phil arrived from the UK and offered Phil a scholarship to play rugby for Life. They won a national championship in Division 1 and then tried twice to win the Super League, during that time Phil had been selected to the USA pool and played for territorial sides and finally won his first cap against Uraguay in 2009 and the rest is history for Phil and our proud organization.
He recently spoke at the Blues annual banquet  last month and announced his jump to Rugby League this spring. Phil attained all of his goals as a union rugby player and is working on his goals with a new family and the focus to on a new career to succeed as a business professional. Phil is the sprit of true American athlete and the pride of Traverse City rugby.
